Flexible Weapons

Chain Whip. Double Chain Whip. Meteor Hammer. Rope Dart. These are the most common traditional flexible weapons. Extension Cord. Bicycle Chain. Belt. These are everyday items that can be used in a moment of need. Flexible weapons are often considered "advanced" weapons, being taught after staff, saber, spear and straight sword. We have found that everyone, beginners to advanced, learn valuable skills regardless of how early they begin.

Here you will learn a series of simple exercises that, when combined, will have you performing the skills you have seen others do.

This class is fun!

Each 8-week term is focused on a specific aspect of the training.

Course 1: Single End
Here we will train and become familiar with the various permutations of vertical circling and figure-eights.

Course 2: Single End
Horizontal circling and figure-eights will be mixed with the vertical circling. A greater emphasis will be placed on stepping.

Course 3: Single End
Wrapping techniques will be taught and practiced, and then mixed with the vertical and horizontal circling methods.

Course 4: Single End
Striking techniques. Here we move away from the theatrical and towards the martial. Stationary and moving targets. Fun and challenging!

Course 5: Twin Single End
Vertical circling, figure-eights, stepping, turning. Here we will blend the skills learned in levels 1-3 with a pair of single-ended whips.

Course 6: Twin Single End
Horizontal circling and striking will be added to what you learned in Course 5. Your quest towards ambidexterity continues!

Course 7: Double End
Here we will learn a traditional flexible weapon, a single rope with a weight on each end. Known as a double Meteor Hammer in China and as a Suruchin in Okinawa, this instrument will increase your coordination and concentration like no other. Also a great workout!

Course 8: Double End
Building upon what was learned in Course 7, we will continue to develop our skills. Using the meteor as both a double-ended and a single-ended tool.

ALL COURSES REQUIRE SAFETY GLASSES.
Though we are using ropes and not chains or heavy weights and have never had an accident, we will not take a chance with your safety! Glasses may be purchased at Paragon Sports (around the corner at Broadway and 18th Street) for either $10 or $15. We prefer the $15 models used for racquetball - located across from the last cash register on the left hand side, as you enter.

If you show up without safety glasses, you will be asked to leave to either purchase some (a 10 minute excursion), or return next week with your own forgotten specs. No shades allowed - you need to clearly see the spinning ropes.

Safety taken care of, you are invited to join us and have a great time!
